JOB SUMMARY






The Carpenter Inspector is responsible for inspecting commercial buildings and building
construction to ensure compliance with building codes as specified by laws and regulations in
conjunction with the approved plans and specifications of the building or structure. The
incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Building Commissioner. This position is
"Classified" within the Civil Service of the City of Parma.

WORK ACTIVITIES

Inspection Duties

• Inspects commercial construction including additions and alterations*
• Inspects general construction in commercial structures*
• Performs final inspection on commercial construction*
• Performs fire safety inspections in conjunction with the Parma Fire Prevention
Bureau*
• Provides notification to the Clerk of Courts of any violations*
Other Duties
• Maintains the daily log, records, and correspondence in accordance with card
filing system*
• Answers inquiries involving code and material requirements*
• Answers complaints from citizens+
• Performs all other related duties as assigned+

JOB CONTEXT
The Carpenter Inspector works a 35 hour work week from 8:30a.m. Until 4:30p.m. Which
includes one unpaid hour for lunch. This position is full-time with benefits and operates 12
months a year. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential job function. The
Carpenter Inspector performs his/her duties in a variety of environments from site to site. The
stress level for this position is medium. The position requires some physical activity and
mobility due to the different types of environments the incumbent may encounter. Some of the
duties are of a confidential nature due to the prosecution violations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Upon hire. An Carpenter Inspector must have:
• A high school diploma or equivalent
• Certification by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards as a
commercial building inspector for general building code requirements
including use group classifications, types of construction, means of egress,
accessibility, energy efficiency, soils, mechanical systems and construction
materials methods
• Additional certifications issued by the Ohio Board of Building Standards
(Preferred)
• A valid State of Ohio driver's license
• Good verbal skills
After hire. Aof building Inspector must have:
• A thorough knowledge of building Department procedures
• A thorough knowledge of changing laws or codes involving carpentry
inspections
• Knowledge of the City of Perma geography
• Proficiency in the use of the following office equipment: calculator, computer,
copy machine, dispatch radio, fax machine and telephone
In accord with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Parma and AFSCME
Local #3924 which expires on December 31, 2017, the Step 1 salary for a Carpenter Inspector
is $60,620.56. The City of Parma is an equal opportunity employer.
The promotional probationary period shall be 60 days in accordance with the above referenced
Collective Bargaining Agreement. The new hire probationary period is one year.
